Signs your septic pump needs to be replaced:

WHAT TO DO WHEN

YOUR SEPTIC PUMP HAS FAILED

Silence the Alarm:  If you have a high level alarm and the pump has failed, the alarm should sound.  Most alarms have a button to silence the sound. This won’t fix the problem, but it gets rid of the alarm temporarily  while you troubleshoot.
Reduce Water Use :  Immediately minimize water usage to avoid exacerbating the issue.
Check the Breaker and Pump: Ensure the pump is getting power and hasn’t tripped a breaker.  If the pump does has power and is running but the water level is not lowering, you might have a blockage.  In this case, you will want to turn the power off to avoid burning out a pump (pumps are expensive!)
Inspect the Float Switch: If possible, check if the float switch is stuck or obstructed.  If you have a piggy-back float connection, try bypassing it by plugging the pump directly into a power outlet.
Call a Professional: If you’re unsure or can’t resolve the issue, call us at 403-899-8992 to diagnose and fix the problem.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF

SEPTIC TANK PUMPS

septic pump

Centrifugal Septic Pumps – most common.  Cannot be rebuilt (replacement only).  Economical, and should last 5-6 years or more.

Septic pump

Turbine Septic Pumps – for use in high-head installations.  Can be rebuilt.  More expensive, but generally last 10+ years or more.

Septic pump

Air compressor – many different types.  Used for aeration only in treatment plants (does not move effluent or water).  Can be rebuilt.

REPLACEMENT COSTS

How much does it cost to replace a septic pump?  That will depend on the type and the size of pump.  Larger systems require larger pumps, which would come at a different cost than a smaller pump.  For a typical residential septic system pump in Alberta, a centrifugal pump is the most common and can cost from $550 – $1500 depending on the pump model and size.  Soilworx only uses commercial grade effluent and sewage pumps, which are only available through specialized suppliers.  Sump pumps and box store pumps are lower quality and should only be used temporarily until a proper pump can be installed.
